R/RStudio
Install R and RStudio on your own device
Both R and RStudio are free, require no license and can be freely installed on as many devices as needed.
You can download and install via AppsAnywhere or click the links on the Maths and Stats Help (MASH) website and follow these instructions:
- The first step is to install R itself. Click the link for your operating system. There are Windows, Linux, and Mac versions of R. There are specific instructions for installing R on each of these operating systems on the website, but in brief, for Windows, click Base and then download the latest version. For Mac, you’ll see a link for the .pkg installation file. You can also click here to download the latest Windows version or here for the latest Mac versions. Note that if you are on a Mac, you may need a different version depending on whether you have one of the newest Macs with an M1 processor or an older Mac, so please follow the instructions at the linked page. You will need to agree to the questions asked during installation.
- This process will install R itself. On Windows you will find R on your desktop. Although you can use R directly, you won’t have the additional features that RStudio provides, rather you will just have the console;
- Install RStudio Desktop. Download the latest version RStudio Desktop for your operating system from this link. There are different versions for Windows, Lunux and Macs;
- Once you have completed downloading RStudio Desktop, load it up and check that it works as expected.
Using RStudio on university PCs
- Log in to AppsAnywhere with your university details;
- If prompted select ‘Open AppsAnywhere Launcher’;
- Launch R Studio (there are a number of versions – check you have the correct one);
- If you do not see the RStudio icon, please search for RStudio in the search box;
- If prompted again select Open AppsAnywhere Launcher;
- Click Launch (green play button). The status should show Running. It can be slow to launch on occasion so please wait for it to open (this may take a few minutes). Once launched you will be able to use the RStudio Desktop as you would on any desktop.
